The 2012 Overnight Walk in the News

Sharing Stories About the Overnight and Spreading the Message Even Further

Beyond the healing aspects that the Overnight provides for Survivors of suicide loss and for those participants who have their own struggles with mental illness, depression, and suicide, the event also provides a stage that engages local communities surrounding the host city. This incredible event draws the attention of local residents and news media and helps to spread the word about suicide and mental illness issues even further.

Each year, the Overnight brings hope and a sense of community to the residents of a different area in the U.S., and each year we are incredibly thankful for the participation of local and national media attention that we receive. With each news story helping highlight a different aspect of the walk and showcasing the variety of participants and their reasons for walking we help to show the world that suicide and mental health issues affect us all.

San Francisco’s Local Media Spreads the Word

San Francisco’s own local CBS affiliate KCBS helped spread word about the 2012 Overnight and showcased the event on their television and radio outlets, blog, and their local events calendar and helped inform locals about event details.

With print articles and broadcast pieces (including an interview with AFSP’s Executive Director Robert Gebbia) KCBS helped spread the word in advance of the event and shared specific details about both the Overnight and AFSP.

Local Newspapers Reflect on Their Communities

Sacramento area news outlet The Elk Grove Citizen also published an article in advance of the Overnight and helped spread the word that many local residents were taking part in the event this past June. Sacramento is approximately 100 miles away from San Francisco, and while we regularly have participants joining us from distances like this, local news attention and coverage helps let even more people in their communities know that the Overnight is coming and is theirs to participate in as well.

This wonderful article not only highlights the reasons for the walk and for AFSP’s programs in general, but does an excellent job of showcasing local residents who participated and helping to put a face on suicide loss.

If you would like to see your local news outlets run stories on the Overnight Walk and AFSP, take a look at our Hometown Press Releases that will help you contact them and let them know that their community is interested in them reporting about this important issue.
