The
Out of the Darkness Overnight is a fundraising walk of 16-18 miles
throughout the night, designed to raise funds and make a bold statement
to bring the issue of suicide out into the light. The Overnight is
organized by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP), the
leading national not-for-profit organization exclusively dedicated to
understanding and preventing suicide through research, education and
advocacy, and to reaching out to people with mental disorders and those
impacted by suicide. For more information, visit www.afsp.org.
First Steps
After
you register, you will receive complete information on training and
fundraising. A Coach will be assigned to you to support you every step
of the way and will help you create a plan to get in shape and exceed
your fundraising minimum. You can connect with fellow Walkers in your
area and even join organized training walks.
A Powerful Impact
Each
Walker agrees to raise at least $1,000. Net proceeds benefit the
American Foundation for Suicide Prevention to fund research, education,
survivor and awareness programs - both to prevent suicide and to assist
those affected by suicide.
Full Time Student Program
Suicide
is the second leading cause of death among college students, and one in
twelve teenagers will attempt suicide this year. Because these
populations are so deeply affected by suicide and depression, we're
making it easier for full time students to participate by reducing the
registration fee to $35 and the minimum fundraising requirement to $700
for all full-time students.
You're in great hands
Out
on the road, you're never alone. The Crew supports you all along the
way. Rest stops line the route, stocked with everything you need to stay
safe and energized. Best of all, the thousands of fellow Walkers form a
seemingly endless sea of smiles, kind words and helping hands.
Capture the Spirit
It's
easy to get swept up in the spirit of the Out of the Darkness
Overnight. You can sense it in the air and see it in the faces all
around you. It's a tide of hope that will not be turned. A well of
generosity that will never run dry. This is what all-out commitment
feels like. This is the road to a future where no one has to suffer in
silence.
