More Than Sad

AFSP’s Educational program for Students

One of the most well known of AFSP’s educational programs designed for students, the More Than Sad film is designed to help educate students about suicide and the risk factors and mental illnesses that often precede it.

With separate educational materials designed for students and educators and school personnel, the More Than Sad program offers resources and situational examples of depression in real-life scenarios. With more than 7,500 copies of the film distributed to date, More Than Sad is helping schools around the country better recognize and address depression in their student bodies.

Two Films and Instructional Materials

More Than Sad is made up of two separate films that are designed to give tools and educational touchstones to their audiences.

More Than Sad: Preventing Teen Suicide helps to educate teachers, counselors and other high school personnel about the warning signs and causes of youth suicide and the steps that they can take to get the proper help for their students.

More Than Sad: Teen Depression is designed to give teens a realistic and recognizable view of teen depression and help promote help-seeking behaviors while reducing much of the stigma, fear, and misconception about mental illness and treatment for depression.

With positive results and feedback from both groups, More Than Sad is a part of the Best Practices Registry for Suicide Prevention and is endorsed by the National Association of School Psychologists.

Endorsed widely by the State Boards of Education of several states and comprehensively adopted throughout the public school systems of others, More Than Sad continues to be adopted by educators and is increasingly used as a tool to help better anticipate and address teen depression and suicide.
